On September 15, 2014, ASTTBC Registrar Charles Joyner issued the following letter to Registered Onsite Wastewater Practitioners:
Standard Practice Manual (SPM) Version 3 Training Workshops
for All Registered Onsite Wastewater Practitioners (ROWP)
In September 2014, the Ministry of Health with responsibility for Sewerage System Regulations will release the revised 3rd edition of the Standard Practice Manual (SPM 3). ASTTBC has been contracted by the Ministry of Health to provide training workshops to inform all ROWPs of the changes being introduced through the new SPM 3.
This is an extremely important opportunity for all ROWPs to remain current with new practices. The training is a mandatory continuing professional development requirement that every ROWP must complete to retain their ASTTBC registration in 2015 – 2016. ROWPs are required to attend sessions corresponding to each category of their registration.
Planners and Inspectors are required to attend all sessions. It is highly recommended that Installers and Maintenance Providers attend all sessions. Health Authority personnel, Professional Engineers, Engineering Licensees, and Professional Geoscientists are invited to attend. Suppliers and other interested parties may also attend.
An electronic copy of the SPM version 3 will be posted on the Ministry of Health website by September 30, 2014. You will be notified when the posting is active and provided with a link to the document.
PURPOSE OF WORKSHOPS:
The workshops will provide an overview of acceptable practices and use of standards. Participants will gain an understanding of the material changes to SPM 3 over SPM 2. The rationale for significant changes and the sources upon which standards were derived will be discussed. Participants will complete learning exercises to apply new standards and reinforce fundamental competencies. The workshop will also provide ASTTBC with a crucial opportunity to communicate with Practitioners about expectations for suitable practices.
FACILITATORS: Michael Payne, MEng, PEng, PGeo., is the lead facilitator for the Planning Workshop and is a co-author of SPM 31. The lead facilitator for the second day of each workshop is Jim Andersen, ROWP. Jim has many years’ experience as a Planner, Installer, Maintenance Provider and Private Inspector. Jim is also an ASTTBC Compliance Officer for Onsite Wastewater.
